Intro Oil Painting for Absolute Beginners
Join Depo Owner Jules Webster for a fun and informative intro to oil painting. This class is structured for absolute beginners to oil painting who do not know how to get started. All painting materials will be included. We will complete two small 5x7" paintings of very simple subjects on canvas board to understand how to use brushes, oil paint, and mediums. Students will leave with two small sample paintings and the confidence to get started painting at home.
This class will include an optional break for lunch or a snack from 1:30 - 2:00 where students can go on to our patio or the gardens in the historical village behind our shop to eat and recharge.
In this class, we will learn:
- What materials you will need to get started
- How to prep a canvas before painting
- How to trace an outline onto the canvas
- How to layer paint from thin to thick
- What "fat over lean" means
- Very simple color theory
- How to select brushes to use with oils
- How to clean brushes after painting
Students should bring: a notebook and pencil for taking notes, a non-aloholic beverage, a snack or simple bag lunch, a low flat box or newspaper to put down in your car to get your paintings home.
Sample schedule:
11:00 - 12:00 lecture and demo
12:00 - 1:45: complete first painting
1:45 - 2:00 break and reset
2:00 - 3:30 complete second painting
3:30 - 4:00 show and tell. Learn how to clean brushes, dispose of oil rags.
