IMPRESSIONIST LANDSCAPES IN PASTEL



The class will learn about how to create the important elements of landscape: trees, sky/clouds and colorful fields. Each of the three elements will be discussed and practiced before the class uses what they’ve learned to create a small landscape.

Demonstrations given by the instructor.

Students will learn the following:
- How to manipulate soft pastels and watercolor on pastel paper to create an impressionistic Landscape Painting.
- How and when to layer color for maximum impact. Some color theory is employed in this technique.
- How to create depth with watercolor as an underpainting for pastels.
- How to create a thumbnail sketch to capture shadows as
Students will walk away with several small projects where techniques are practiced and one finished painting.
Please feel free to bring your own set of pastels if you prefer.
Students should bring or buy:
9” x 12” sanded paper or board. Good papers to choose are Ampersand Pastel Board in any color, Colorfix Sanded Paper and UArt Sanded paper in any grit. All papers and boards are available at the Depo.
Cancellation Policy: Cancellation Policy: We will refund 50% for any cancellation made at least eight days before the class. If you cannot attend after registration, you are welcome to gift your tuition to a friend at no charge. We do not transfer tuition from one class to another.

Instructor: Mary Jane Erard
Instructor Bio: Mary Jane Erard is an award-winning artist painting mostly in soft pastel and mixed media with acrylic. Her works are usually rural landscapes of the US and Europe.
